Abstract
This article examines the lexical-semantic features of English and Karakalpak legal terminology through a qualitative and illustrative comparison. It focuses on semantic specialization, polysemy, semantic proximity, terminological variation, hierarchical relations, collocation, and translation equivalence. English examples are drawn mainly from a recent legal dictionary, while the Karakalpak material is selected from official legal texts of the Republic of Karakalpakstan. The analysis suggests that legal terms should not be compared as isolated words: their interpretation depends on jurisdiction, branch of law, document type, institutional function, and collocational environment. The selected English examples show the interaction of ordinary and specialized meanings, whereas the Karakalpak sources show productive multi-word terms and a legally defined classification of normative acts and the documents approved by them.
