Abstract

The article investigates the metaphorical modelling of concessivity in German and Uzbek phraseological systems. The analysis moves beyond grammatical concession and focuses on figurative units in which restriction, access, support, mediation and the removal of obstacles are conceptualized through recurrent spatial and anthropocentric images. Particular attention is paid to the conceptual domains of way, door, bridge, hand, communication and freedom. German units such as den Weg ebnen, freie Bahn haben, Türen öffnen, Brücken bauen, jemandem freie Hand lassen and Grenzen überwinden are compared with Uzbek expressions including yo‘l ochmoq, yo‘l bermoq, eshik ochmoq, ko‘prik bo‘lmoq, qo‘l uzatmoq, til topishmoq, ko‘ngliga yo‘l topmoq and erkin nafas olmoq.
